Changing Houses into Homes

Renovate. Design. Style.

A home is where your heart and soul thrive; memories are created, and lessons learned.  These things can have a long history, just like the homes that inspire them.

At BTH Designs, we have a passion for taking tired, worn houses and reimagining both the functionality and design styles for today’s families. Whether we are renovating an entire house for resale or updating and refreshing for a client, we want to create not only beautiful, but functional, spaces.  We admire the charm and character of older homes and always wonder what kind of stories they hold from the past – and what stories they will have in the future. We are on a wonderful journey and hope you will follow along with us as we work to change tired houses into beautiful homes.

The Brandon House

The Brandon House was our first real estate rehab project. As soon as we saw her, we knew we could do something special to bring her back to life. She is located in the Cincinnati suburb of Mt. Washington and was exactly what we were looking for to renovate and keep as a rental property.  She was only a 900 sq. ft. 2-bedroom, 1 bath brick bungalow.  The living room and kitchen were closed off from each other, and we realized it couldn’t stay that way if we wanted to create more open space for memories.  That was the beginning of our uncontrollable desire to remove walls. We took her from a 1950’s bungalow to a home with an open concept and modern updates for our renters to enjoy.

The Donjoy House

After finishing up our little 900 sq. ft. rental house, we walked away with the confidence that anything is possible when it comes to improving a house.  The Donjoy house was a 1,600 sq. ft. 1960’s ranch that was located in a desirable, older neighborhood of Blue Ash, Ohio. This house had tons of potential, but it didn’t reflect the value that the area brought.  It looked exactly like what it was – a 1960’s old brick ranch.  On the inside, the living room and dining room were large and open, but the tiny kitchen was closed off and sat behind a wall of basement stairs.  This is when we discovered the ability, and our desire, to move stairs between floors to provide an open concept.  This was a fun house to design because of its spacious footprint and the ability to create new spaces, both on the main floor and in the lower level.

The Section House

We couldn’t resist this ugly, neglected, brown house that sat down off the road across a bridge, hidden behind overgrown trees, shrubs and weeds.  It looked so lonely, like a puppy at the pound begging to be adopted.  She was a massive 5,000+ sq. ft. ranch that wasn’t even close to fulfilling her true potential.  She sat among large, stately houses in the very desirable neighborhood of Amberley Village in Cincinnati, so we knew we had to bring her back to life. Due to her massive exterior and picturesque setting, we decided to reinvent her as a large, modern farmhouse. This was a very large and complicated rehab project and caught the attention of local media.  After almost a year of construction and a very deliberate, polished design, we finally saw her true beauty.
